Rain, Boats & Wings

Pity Party. Table for 1 please.

Do you ever have those days weeks where it feels like nothing is going right?

Delilah slams her finger in the door. I spill coffee in my car. Nope. No napkins. Why would there be.

My car leaves me stranded and $500 later, I have a running vehicle again.

Woohoo, its pay day! Op. Never mind, my pay has been docked because of all of the days I have missed.

waaaa.wa.waaaaaaaaaa.

I was feeling a little down, but then Byron said, "Sarah, go get a damn pedicure." And my response was natural, "No, no. I still have to make lunches, do laundry, clean the floors, floss my teeth...."

yadda.yadda.yadda.

I went to get a pedicure. And it was lovely. Just 30 minutes. 30 minutes is all it took to shake me of my piss-poor mood. I came home and Byron was doing laundry. Delilah was playing. Delilah was so excited to see me, Byron looked at my toes, and I was reminded of how lucky I am.

As irritating as things have been, they are not what is important. Granted, I feel like my head is about to explode, but regardless, not important and not what matters.

I kicked myself out of my party.

We had a great weekend, it was tiring, but great. We went on a boat, Delilah played in a little pool, we saw ducks. Delilah loves to dress up and we have had crazy, crazy storms. Here is a look at our weekend in pictures.

Delilah Gets a Fish

Delilah has a thing with animals, I mean what almost 2 year old doesn't? We have, a very big and rambunctious dog, Rebar. Delilah loves pointing outside and saying, "No, No Rebar" when he is barking. And really enjoys the occasional, and I mean like once or month or so, meeting with Rebar.

Needless to say, I am not ready for another animal, even though I am trying to talk Byron into getting a cat for Delilah, I know, Im crazy. I am having a hard time getting everyone fed, and dressed, so why add another animal to the mix.

Everyday, when we leave Delilah's school, she points and stops and says hi to everyone of the fish they have in their fish tank. It's cute. For the first 2 minutes. I literally have to pry her away from the fish tank and bribe her with something just to get in the car. Once she is ok with our terms, she then has to point and say "Byebye fish, see you later" to every one of the fish.

Well, we ended up winning a lottery basket from Delilah's school, won $40. Delilah ended up with strep throat and another ear infection. So, the only logically thing to do was buy a fish ;)

She loves it and I am sure it will have a name, one day!

Delilah sat through her first parade, saw Chuck Norris, and decided she is not a frozen yogurt fan.

Not loving the loud music.

Hanging out watching Frozen after we got back from the doctor. Strep. Yuck.

Loving broccoli cheese soup ;)

Being cute at school.

Stay tuned for more cuteness with a recap of this weekend. We remember and thank everyone who has served this country. Home of the free because of the brave.

Thank you.

Random Monday Thoughts

Today I went grocery shopping and was able to get in and out in about 45 minutes. (Delilah was at school.) I have now decided to try my very hardest to never, and I mean never, go grocery shopping again on a Monday.

With that being said, I unloaded the car, cleaned out the fridge, put all the groceries up, and started to clean the dishes. Then I saw the light.

The little 'CLEAN' green light on my dishwasher. Damn. Now I have to unload the dishwasher.

I didn't unload the dishwasher. My husband happened to call just as I was about to get in there and do it and then he said the sweet, sweet words, "Don't worry, I will do them when I get home."

That is all it took. Not only did I stop doing the dishes. But I did not unload the dishwasher and I proceeded to sit down and think about what we were going to have for dinner.

We got Mexican food. It was delicious.

I had a brief moment of guilt. I just spent so much money at the grocery store and here we are eating out.

It only lasted a moment ;)

We had a great weekend. Byron bought me a YETI koozie for Mother's Day. Classy.

I love it.

On Sunday, I called my Mom first thing to wish her the best day ever. Since after all, she is pretty much the best mom ever.

We spent the day in La Grange and we hung out with my mother in law and sister in law, brother in law and nephew.

Delilah fed cows, watched the chickens and ducks play, and rode around on the ranger. I had a wonderful time hanging out with everyone and was reminded of how lucky I am.

I am a momma to this wild, crazy, independent, sweet little girl.

This weekend I have decided that I will get away for a moment to get a pedicure and make a diffuser bracelet at a local bead shop.

I have also decided on a haircut and color, now I just need to find the time to go and get that done!

We do a lot of dishes, like any other family. And when I stumbled across this sponge a few years ago I was so happy about such a pretty sponge. I went to go look for more, and I could never find them again! Until...now! I was at The Container Store and you would not believe my excitement when I stumbled across these.

Yep a sparkly sponge. Makes doing dishes that much funner ;)

With summer only weeks away, I am so excited about being able to travel to see my family, hang out with Delilah, and go swimming and make popsicles. She will be in school 2 days a week, so I can't even imagine what I will be able to do for those 2 days I will have to myself, the possibilities are endless! Most importantly, this little girl is turning 2 and I have some party planning to do ;)

I hope you all had a great Monday!

Must Have Items in my Pantry

Grocery shopping. What once was a relaxing, what-new-items-are-out, let me stroll over here to get some butter, experience has now turned into mayhem. Making sure Delilah doesn't fall out of the cart, wrestling her in the cart, justifying not walking all the way over to the juice aisle, we can go one more day without out that juice, because as we were walking through the 88 people trying to get the same juice, Delilah decided it would be a good idea to throw her cheese and shoe out of the cart, so I didn't get the damn juice.

Fun.

Go ahead and label this on the "Things I said I would never do List": Using one of those huge, car carts.

Simpler times, when just being out was enough ;)

I have made grocery shopping a strategic, let's get this shit done, operation. I will make a list, that is usually organized by the store's layout. I stop by the baby aisle first and get a squeezy, which is then followed by Delilah shaking her head, so we u-turn and go by the dairy aisle and I pick up a string cheese, to which I hand to Delilah and she shakes her head proceeding to reach for the squeezy I threw in the cart five minutes ago. I also bring a long (I did not mean to say a long toy, I meant bring along a toy. Sometimes autocorrect just doesn't understand.) a toy, right now the baby doll for a win.

Since we are in the dairy aisle at this point, I start there, always ending with produce.

I make my shopping list according to what we are out of, essential items, and the menu I have made for the week. It makes it easier when I know exactly what I am cooking, so I write my menu on my calendar and then the ingredients on my list. This will change on a weekly basis, but there are items that I always have on hand, either in the pantry or fridge, that make cooking easier. I like to mix up my meals, there are of course the usuals that make an appearance once a week or so, but for the most part, I keep a pretty diverse menu.

Must Have, Always, No Exceptions Items:

milk, juice, cheese (string, babybel, sandwich, sprinkle, garlic and herb spread), pea crisps, fruit chews, bananas, apples, grapes, blueberries, strawberries, mac&cheese, cottage cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese, eggs, bacon (I have a coffee mug full of bacon grease, super helpful for when you don't feel like cooking bacon.), half&half

bow tie pasta, spaghetti, spiral pasta, rice, quinoa, bulgar wheat, potatoes, bread, tortillas

chicken stock, beef stock, crushed tomatoes, cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, refried beans, black beans, soy sauce, honey

I also keep a pretty stocked spice cabinet. Different cuisines will typically use the same basic ingredients and spices for each dish. I am not a chef by any means, but here is what I use when I cook:

Mexican:

garlic powder, onion powder, coriander, cumin, chili powder, oregano
{{cilantro, peppers, crema, pico de gallo}}

Chinese:

garlic powder, onion powder, ground ginger, 5 spice, honey, sesame oil
{{green onion, garlic, ginger, orange juice}}

Greek:

garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, oregano, olive oil
{{feta cheese, mint, parsley, cucumber, lemon, plain yogurt}}

Cajun:

garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, cayenne
{{green bell pepper, celery, onion}}

Southern:

garlic powder, onion powder, Lawrys, onion soup mix, bacon ;)

If you keep these items on hand, you will be amazed at how much you can make. I will make Greek Chicken peta wraps, with cucumber yogurt one night, fried chicken or pot roast another night, then finish the week with Lo Mein!

I hope this has helped you!

Please comment with your favorite dinner recipes. I always love new ideas ;)

Recent Amazement

Life has really been amazing me lately. Mostly good amazing.

My brother was in town last week from New York. My family is a tad bit spread out, so we don't get to see each other as much as I would like. I have really missed being around family and having Delilah has only made me miss everyone that much more. She loves her family so much, and even though it has been a few days since my mom and brother left, she still very optimistically asks where "Gonny" is. Maybe if she asks enough, Gonny will appear ;)

So, that is one thing that has amazed me lately. How much I love my family and how much I miss being around them. It also amazes me that even though I haven't seen my brother in about 6 months, we hang out and don't miss a beat from the moment we are back together again.

Delilah, as usual, is amazing me everyday. She is wanting to know what everything is, and repeating everything, and I mean, everything that we say.

No she didn't just say shit, she was saying sit.

She tells me she wants yogurt. She tells me she wants to watch the ABC song. She tells me to walk away.

Her hair is growing and here is Delilah with her first pigtails:

Delilah balances a cup on her head:

Delilah and her love of hats:

And finally, Delilah's big girl bed:

It has been a lovely weekend of spending time getting beat up by my brother. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am amazed, constantly, by this wonderful and crazy life that I have been given.

I hope you all have a great night!

xoxo
